By moving to decriminalize marijuana New Jersey sets the ground rules to future state-mandated recreational use. Gurbir Grewal, the State’s Attorney General, issued a directive to all municipal prosecutors to adjourn all marijuana offenses until September 4. Thus, allowing the state time to present “appropriate guidance” to eliminate past and current consequences. In a memo, Grewal wrote to all 21 counties suggesting a new directive initialed by Governor Phil Murphy’s intent to legalize recreational use of marijuana. 1/
Executive director, Amol Sinha, American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, wrote, in part, “Grewal’s declaration is the first step for New Jersey to reform our marijuana laws and ultimately righting the wrongs of unjust marijuana enforcement.”
Scott Rudder, president of New Jersey CannaBusiness Association, said, “Grewal’s memo is great and welcome news for the state.”
1/ During his gubernatorial campaign last year, Murphy made legal weed a dominant campaign platform.
